Colac builds new homes to keep healthcare workers local
A government project promises flexible one and two-bedroom units, keeping wages and materials spending local.
Colac Area Health will soon get 16 new worker accommodation units, designed to attract and retain healthcare staff in the region.
The project is expected to create 91 construction jobs and support the local economy.
What happened: BDH Constructions, a Colac-based company with more than 20 years of experience across the Great South Coast, will lead the project, funded through the state government’s Regional Worker Accommodation Fund.
The units include one-bedroom homes that can be joined to form two-bedroom dwellings for workers and their families.
What they’re saying: BDH managing director John Duynhoven said the project will keep the majority of wages and materials spending in Colac, supporting local families, suppliers, and trades.
Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes said the fund helps workers live closer to their jobs while ensuring industries have the skilled staff they need.
Colac Area Health CEO Fiona Brew said access to affordable housing has long been a barrier for recruiting health professionals.
“This investment means more healthcare workers can call Colac home, building their careers and their lives in the community they serve,” said Brew.
Major employer: The Colac-Otway area supports over 1,600 healthcare and social assistance jobs, making it one of the region’s largest employers.
