“Stay inside”: West Vic flash flood warnings as cold snap hits Victoria

Residents in Lexton are being warned to not leave their homes as flash flooding hits areas between Talbot, Moonambel and Maryborough. 

❓What happened: A powerful cold front swept over southern parts of Australia during the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall to Victoria. 

⌚ What next: VicEmergency said people in areas surrounding Maryborough and Lexton are in danger and should move indoors immediately.

Flash flooding on either side of the Pyrenees Highway has prompted authorities to warn locals to avoid driving, trees, low-lying areas and creeks and reach out to neighbours and family members to ensure they are aware of the situation. 

Flash flooding is especially dangerous due to the rapid, sudden increase in water levels and can occur almost anywhere after a short, intense burst of rainfall. 

Riverine risk: Residents are being warned to remain alert in Creswick and Clunes as a riverine flood is underway, which may cause local roads and bridges to be submerged. 

There are also minor floods in parts of Beaufort and Ballarat.
